Myleeza lost 70 pounds. When medication and poor eating habits led to significant weight gain, she knew it was time to do something. Meal prep and weight training are two of the tools this Delta Sigma Theta soror used to transform her body. Check out her story.

Myleeza before and after

I’ve been “The Big Girl” all my life. After gaining 60+ pounds due to mental health medications and poor eating habits, I knew that I had to do something.

I started my weight loss journey in May 2018 by meal prepping and working out 5-6 days a week. So far, I’ve dropped 70 pounds, three pants sizes, and even a shoe size! I’ve honestly never felt better in my life!

What inspired you to keep going, even when you wanted to give up?
What inspired me when I wanted to give up was remembering why I started in the first place. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, and me giving up will only set me back even further. I just kept going. Even when I didn’t feel like it, even when I was tired, and even when it was too cold/hot/raining; I just kept going!

How did you change your eating habits?
Meal prepping helped me tremendously. The only meat I ate was chicken, fish, and turkey with lots of veggies on the side. I cut out cold drinks (sodas) over ten years ago, but I loved sugary drinks like lemonade and sweet tea. I cut those drinks out and replaced them with sugar-free green tea and water only. I also ate oatmeal, turkey bacon, and eggs for breakfast with a salad for lunch.

Tell us about your workout routine.
With my body type, I noticed that I lose more weight when I lift weights. My weight training consists of lots of squats and lifting in the gym. I also do an ab circuit that includes weight training as well. I do 15 minutes of cardio to warm up, usually on the Stair Master or I do HIIT training on the treadmill.

What is your height?
I am 6’0″.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
The biggest lesson I learned is to be patient with your body. It didn’t take you a short amount of time to gain all of the weight, so don’t think it will take you a short time to lose it as well.

What advice would you like to share with women who want to lose weight?
Understand that you can’t outwork a bad diet. Weight loss is 80% diet and 20% exercise.
