Salihah before and after

What was your motivation?
My motivation was to feel better and have more energy. I was always happy and confident about the way I looked, but I didn’t feel my best. In 2017, when I reached my highest weight, I realized I had to do something to change. I was experiencing aches and pains in my joints from carrying around all the extra weight.

When did you start your journey? How long did your transformation take?
I have been yo-yo dieting most of my life, since the age of 10. I got serious in 2017. It took me 1 and 1/2 years to reach my first goal of a size 16. I’m still on my fitness journey.

How did you change your eating habits?
I drastically reduced my food intake by practicing portion control. I also incorporated intermittent fasting, which helped the weight come off consistently. I used the 8:16hr fasting method every day for a year to lose 100 pounds.

I changed my diet from eating processed and fast foods to clean whole foods. I didn’t cut out any food group. Instead, I just cut down on the amount of food I was eating from each group. Half my plate is always filled with veggies, 1/3 protein & 1/4 carbs. Carbs are always my smallest portion, but I still consume some to get through my workouts. I rarely consume processed sugar and only treat myself on special occasions.

What did your workout routine consist of?
At the beginning of my journey, I did a lot of home workouts on YouTube. I started with kickboxing, Zumba, and weightlifting using my TV in the living room. I work out 4-5 days a week in a fasted state before I have my first meal at noon. Sometimes I also take a brisk walk after eating my last meal at 8 pm. With consistent exercise (especially weight training), I have been able to tone up a lot quicker than I expected.

What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
I have lost over 100lbs. I don’t like focusing on numbers because everyone carries their weight differently, and numbers can be very deceptive. I focus on measurements and clothing size instead. I started at a size 26 in plus size clothing. Now I wear a regular size 16.

What is your height?
5’8″

Is weight loss surgery part of your journey?
No, I didn’t have weight loss surgery or take any weight loss medication.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
Never give up on yourself and be patient. Nothing worth fighting for is ever going to come easy. No matter what, do it for yourself and no one else! Start today, because time will continue to move on, and life is too short to be unhappy. Work on yourself every day physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

What advice do you have for people who want to lose weight?
Stop comparing yourself to others and remember that everyone’s journey is different. Each woman will carry their weight differently, so don’t focus so much on the numbers. Focus on the changes and improvements in your body. There is no such thing as one size fits all. There is no perfect weight or size. Just get down to where you feel your best and most comfortable. Also, have lots of faith and believe in the process. It takes time, consistency, and patience.
