Tanae before and after

What was your motivation? What inspired you to keep going during the tough times?
I was motivated to lose weight for both physical and health
reasons. My weight gain caused me to develop high blood pressure. Also, my mother was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, which was contributed to her being obese. I was concerned and afraid that if I didn’t lose the weight, I too would end up being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes like others in my family. The physical reason I wanted to lose weight was that it became difficult to teach dance every day. I couldn’t even walk up stairs without losing my breath. When I was 40 pounds overweight, I didn’t feel like myself.

For inspiration, I keep looking at my before pictures from four years ago when I was at my goal weight. I had to keep reminding myself that I could and would meet this goal again, regardless of my age. I was also motivated when I began to lose inches and gain endurance when I started walking and then running again.

How did you change your eating habits?
I changed my eating habits by juicing and becoming a vegetarian. However, I ate fish every now and again. I ate a low carb diet and stayed away from bread and pasta. I also practiced intermittent fasting, with an eating window from 12-8 pm. I continue to use intermittent fasting and being vegetarian to maintain my goal weight.

Tell us about your workout routine.
I worked out every day by incorporating cardio and weightlifting. I also walked daily.

Starting weight/Current weight
I started at 158 pounds, and now I weigh 118 pounds.

What is your height?
I am 4 feet, 11 inches and three quarters

When did you start your journey?
I started focusing really intensely on my weight loss journey on May 6, 2018. I started going to a gym with my husband and doing boot camp style workouts. I lost the weight by September 2018, when I went back to work as a school teacher. My transformation took 4 months.

I wrote a book about my journey of losing 40 pounds in 4 months, while over 40 years old.

Is weight loss surgery part of your journey?
I did not have weight loss surgery.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
I learned that I could do anything if I set a goal, stayed focused, and was disciplined to reach that goal.

What advice would you like to share?
My advice would be that as women, we really need to look first at our diet. If you change your diet, drink water, decrease your food intake, and increase the amount and intensity of your exercise routine, then you will see results.
